Individually Managed Accounts

The core business of NAM is managing individual accounts or IMA’s. Chris Navin has succesfully managed IMA’s since 1990 and began managing IMA’s exclusively in 2000.

Clients sign an Investment Management agreement outlining the terms and conditions under which their account will be managed.

Our IMA’s are managed and administered ‘in house’ allowing us to provide a more personalised and efficient service. We provide timely quarterly reporting and maintain regular contact with our IMA clients.

How an IMA operates

Clients establish an account with us by lodging cash or existing shares. Investments are not pooled, they are held under their own individual HIN which is sponsored by E*trade Australia. We process all market transactions through E*trade and establish an E*trade ANZ bank cash management account (CMT) to settle share transactions. This account is also used to receive dividend payments and process management fees.

We operate under a limited power of attorney in order to facilitate the day to day management of your investments. This only gives us authority to deal within your account. Any transfers of stock or cash can only be acheived with written authorisation from you.

Where a margin loan is to be part of the portfolio the HIN will be sponsored by Macquarie Investment Lending. The transactions are processed through E*trade and settled via the margin loan. The E*trade ANZ CMT account is still required to receive dividend payments and process management fees.

Investment strategy

Individual portfolios are professionally managed with an absolute commitment to the preservation and growth of your wealth.

All investments will be in Australian Listed shares. We approach the Australian sharemarket with a minimum 3 to 5 year time frame with our best results achieved over an investment period greater than 5 years.

A typical portfolio would contain shares in 15 to 25 very profitable Australian companies. These companies are selected for their excellent growth prospects. 75% to 80% of the portfolio would include companies from the ASX Top 100 (the top 100 shares by capitalisation in the Australian sharemarket). Portfolios are well diversified across various industries with typically no more than 9% invested in any one share.

We regard stock selection as critical to investment success and have developed a proven, well defined and disciplined strategy to both buying and selling shares. We do not enter into any derivative products and the portfolio does not target speculative issues or property companies.

Objectivity is also critical. Our methods are designed to take the emotion out of the investment process. Confidence, experience and discipline serve us well in producing exceptional returns for our clients.

Reporting

As part of our service, we handle all of the paperwork relating to your investments and administer your portfolio through the Praemium portfolio administration service. Praemium provides superior tax and reporting features.

After each quarter we provide a portfolio report detailing the performance for the quarter, a current portfolio valuation and transactions that have occurred throughout the quarter including share trading, income & expenses and corporate actions.

In July we prepare a comprehensive financial year end tax report for you to provide to your accountant. This report includes:

  • Performance reports
  • Portfolio valuation reports
  • Transaction reports
  • Income and expense reports
  • Realised CGT reports
  • Unrealised CGT reports
  • Tax Summary

Clients can also view their portfolios on-line at anytime through our website. The link to Praemium allows clients to view their current portfolio valuation, portfolio performance, transactions and all historical information relating to their account.

We can also provide your accountant with access to Praemium, which includes ‘what-if’ functionality to assist in managing your tax situation.
